Sunday, December 26, 2010. Today I am grateful for my daughter, Charlene, for the life she leads and for the people whom she influences for good. She could not have given me a better Christmas present than Heidi S. Swinton’s biography about a hero of mine, “The Big Swede with the Big Heart”: Thomas S. Monson.

In Heidi S. Swinton’s thoroughgoing work, To the Rescue: The Biography of Thomas S. Monson, she points out his native optimism and his healing influences on the lives of regular people everywhere (page 5):

“He starts his first meeting of the day with ‘Top of the morning’ [which alone is enough to warm the cockles of the heart of this Irishman, me], he whistles in the middle of the afternoon, and he advocates with true sincerity finding ‘joy in the journey’ at every turn.

“Some of those [he serves] look put together on the outside but cry out . . . from within . . . .

“He hears them.

“He has continually offered the promise of peace, hope, and comfort in spite of challenges and grief, some seemingly insurmountable.”

[This is my kind of guy–how I wish I could emulate him more!!!]

“He quotes often the promise of Jesus Christ:

‘I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up’.”

This promise is from the Doctrine and Covenants (Section 84, Verse 88), one of the four volumes of scripture sacred to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

(1) The Holy Bible (both the Old Testament and the New Testament)

(2) The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ

(3) The Pearl of Great Price

(4) The Doctine and Covenants

My hero, Tomas S. Monson, “the Big Swede with the Big Heart,” is currently President of the worldwide church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Thank you, Heidi S. Swinton, for bringing us the whole life of the man who brings wholeness to all who come within his sphere of influence!
