JASON Foundation for Education – Founded by Dr. Robert D. Ballard

Tuesday, December 14, 2010. Today I am grateful for people whose passion for their profession brings us greater knowledge than we would otherwise enjoy. An example is Dr. Robert D. Ballard, one of the world’s leading marine biologists. It was his persistence that located the wrecks of both the Titanic (1985) and the Bismarck (1989).

My sister Anita gave me this book to read the other day. I enjoyed both the search for the sunken Bismarck, the retelling of the original search for the Bismarck by the British Navy, and the drama of the Bismarck’s last hours on the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

“[Dr. Ballard is] the founder of the JASON Foundation for Education, a non-profit organization that uses state-of-the-art technology to involve students in the excitement of scientific discovery. Since 1989, Dr. Ballard has taken over 400,000 school children on live electronic field trips to explore a Roman shipwreck on the floor of the Mediterranean and to view sunken sailing ships from the War of 1812 in Lake Ontario.” – From the dust cover of The Discovery of the Bismarck.
