My son is 9 years old. He has ADHD and some neurological difficulties (fine motor, eye-hand coordination problems, auditory and visual perception problems, he can show you the right numbers but if you ask him to write “a” or “2” he can’t. His attention problem is very severe he uses metilfenidate but because of it’s side effects we can not optimize the dose).
The biggest problem is he is reluctant to read, write and academic activities. He has lack of motivation. He also has some behavioural problems. He likes social talking, to talk about cars, he lears much more by living it.
Dear Ozen,
Your son presents you with a lot of challenges. He has a
multitude of both attentional and learning difficulties, as you
have stated.
You appear to have a good grasp of the extent of your son’s
problems.
I admire you for working with him.
I am glad you know that he will do better with a “hands on, ”
tangible, concrete approach to learning, in contrast to a
more abstract academic approach.
It is also very gratifying that you know that he will do better
learning when the topic is of interest to him. This is because
the RAS (reticular activating system) in his brain “fires up”
more readily and more reliably when the topic is of interest.
His RAS does not respond well when the topic carries no interest
(carries no emotional charge), or is too abstract, dull, or boring.
Because your son’s range of learning and attentional difficulties
is quite extensive, it would be well for you to find a professional
near at hand who is able and willing to help you with the many
needed tasks that will assist you and your son to move ahead.
I am happy to help in any way I can from a long distance away
(I live in Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA). However, I feel that you
and your son need someone near at hand because of the many
difficulties that need to be addressed.
What do you think?
Sincerely,
Doc Meek
