“Live in the present.” – Jeannette Meek

Thursday, October 28, 2010. Today I am grateful I have no time to do this delightful blog task fully right now. Later I can fill this in with some more gratitudes?

I am trying to learn to live in the present. Not easy for me! 😼

For a man who has lived his life primarily in the past and in the future, it is not a light thing to switch to the present, eh? 😼

My wife Jeannette lives in the present every day. Needless to say, she is much happier than I am. 😼

Here’s to those who learn from the past, plan for the future, and live in the present!!!

“True friends are true.” – Doc Meek

Wednesday, October 27, 2010. Today I am grateful for a friend who is stalwart and true to what he believes. Great to see steadiness, persistence and dignity in a man, or woman or child.

One classic story of character is Ruth in the Book of Ruth in the Old Testament (Ruth is short for “retut,” meaning “lovely friend”).

Some quotations on character from: http://josephsoninstitute.org/quotes/character.html

Character is what you are in the dark.
— Unknown

Most people say that it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is character.
— Albert Einstein, Swiss-American mathematician, physicist and public philosopher (1879-1955)

Character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations alike.
— Theodore Roosevelt, American adventurer and 26th president (1858-1919)

What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson, American essayist, philosopher and poet (1803-1882)

If you will think about what you ought to do for other people, your character will take care of itself. Character is a by-product, and any man who devotes himself to its cultivation in his own case will become a selfish prig.
— Woodrow Wilson, 28th American president (1856-1924)

If you don’t have enemies, you don’t have character.
— Paul Newman, American actor (b. 1925)

Why are we surprised when fig trees bear figs?
— Margaret Titzel

Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.
— Abraham Lincoln, 16th U.S. president (1809-1865)

Many a man’s reputation would not know his character if they met on the street.
— Elbert Hubbard, 19th/20th-century American entrepreneur and philosopher (founder of Roycroft)

A person’s character is what it is. It’s a little like a marriage – only without the option of divorce. You can work on it and try to make it better, but basically you have to take the bitter with the sweet.
— Henrik Hertzberg, 20th-century American editor and journalist

What a man’s mind can create, man’s character can control.
— Attributed to Thomas Edison, American inventor (1847-1931)

The true test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of cities, nor the crops – no, but the kind of man the country turns out.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson, American essayist, philosopher and poet (1803-1882)

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.
— Helen Keller, American social activist, public speaker and author (1880-1968)

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically… Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.
— Martin Luther King Jr., American civil rights leader (1929-1968)

The best index to a person’s character is (a) how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can’t fight back.
— Abigail van Buren (Pauline Esther Friedman), American newspaper advice columnist (1918-2002)

The measure of a man’s character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out.
— Baron Thomas Babington Macauley, English historian and statesman (1800-1859)

Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, riches take wing, and only character endures.
— Horace Greeley, American journalist and educator (1811-1872)

The proper time to influence the character of a child is about a hundred years before he’s born.
— William R. Inge, American playwright (1913-1973)

The formation of character in young people is educationally a different task from and a prior task to, the discussion of the great, difficult ethical controversies of the day.
— William J. Bennett, author and former U.S. Secretary of Education (b. 1943)

One can acquire everything in solitude — except character.
— Henri Stendahl, French novelist (1783-1842)

If a man has any greatness in him, it comes to light, not in one flamboyant hour, but in the ledger of his daily work.
— Beryl Markham, English adventurer and author (1902-1986)

You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.
— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German poet, novelist, playwright, scientist and philosopher (1749-1832)

…………………………………………………..

I salute those who speak of the value of character, and especially those who exhibit this golden trait in their daily living.

“The laborer is worthy.” – Luke 10:7

Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Today I am grateful for friends who came and helped my spouse Jeannette and I to renovate our home. In the Bible, the phrase, “the laborer is worthy of his hire,” refers to those who labor in the ministry.

However, it is true of all laborers I think.

My Photo Name: Joseph Marshall Location: Columbus, Ohio, United States; Profession: Writer, Cabinetmaker

Image from: http://shotofpolitics.blogspot.com/2005/02/laborer-is-worthy-of-his-hire.html

Some people think that academic enterprises are superior to manual labor. I don’t think so. Without humble laborers, we wouldn’t have buildings in which to carry on schooling and we wouldn’t have homes to live in.

Here’s to all laborers, big and small!

And a special salute today to Craig, Val, Madi, Jody and Rick, who helped renew our humble older home. Thank you, one and all!

“I am grateful for sickness.” – Doc Meek

Monday, October 25, 2010. Today I am grateful for my vertigo attack on Sunday. Grateful? Yes, I can learn even from sickness.

The nausea accompanying my vertigo gives me greater empathy for pregnant women who have “morning sickeness,” especially when it lasts all day and into the night. I carried my “barf bucket” with me everywhere just as my daughter Tanya did when she was pregnant.

Sickness also gives me greater empathy for anyone with any kind of affliction.

Likewise, my brothers Craig and Conrad came and ministered unto me. I am so grateful for them! I feel so much better today!

And Val brought me some chicken and potatoes for later, when my stomach stopped rebelling against perfectly good food. 😼

Thank you Val!

Nothing like potatoes to warm an Irishman’s heart, eh? 😼

Here’s to angels, from on high, and in our neighborhood!

P.S. My beloved spouse Jeannette writes to me:

Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear Collins, Happy Birthday to you!

May God bless you today! May God bless you today! May God bless you and keep you! May God bless you today!

Thank you, Jeannette!

“Good Samaritans Galore.” – Doc Meek

Friday, October 22, 2010. I am so grateful that there are good Samaritans everywhere!

Image:  http://www.solmobility.com/sitebuilder/images/Male_Client_Scooter_3_-199×242.jpg

Yesterday, as I was driving away from the library, I noticed an elderly lady in a handicap scooter. It was tipped over and she was lying sideways on the pavement next to the sidewalk. No one seemed to notice her!

I immediately parked my car and made haste to help her up. As I came up to her I noted that six other cars had likewise parked in a rush, and 3 guys and 3 gals were helping to right the lady and her scooter.

Good Samaritans Galore!

When I got back to my car, I wept.

Tears of joy!

Apparently the elderly lady had driven along the sidewalk in her scooter and hadn’t noticed that there was no sloped surface leading to the road. She dropped off the curb and her scooter tipped over!

I guess no one ever thought to put roll bars on a handicap scooter!

Addendum (image and text below from Wikipedia):  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_Good_Samaritan

This stained glass window illustrating the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) shows the priest and the Levite in the background (Church of St. Eutrope, Clermont-Ferrand, France).
.
“The parable of the Good Samaritan is a parable told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke (10:25-37). In the parable, a Jewish traveller is beaten, robbed, and left half dead along the road. First a priest and then a Levite come by, but both avoid the man. Finally, a Samaritan comes by. Samaritans and Jews generally despised each other, but the Samaritan helps the injured Jew. Jesus is described as telling the parable in response to a question regarding the identity of the “neighbour” which Leviticus 19:18 says should be loved.Portraying a Samaritan in positive light would have come as a shock to Jesus’ audience.[1] It is typical of his provocative speech in which conventional expectations are inverted.[1]

“Some Christians, such as Augustine, have interpreted the parable allegorically, with the Samaritan representing Jesus Christ, who saves the sinful soul.[2] Others, however, discount this allegory as unrelated to the parable’s original meaning,[2] and see the parable as exemplifying the ethics of Jesus, which have won nearly universal praise, even from those outside the Church.[3]

“The parable has inspired painting, sculpture, poetry, and film. The colloquial phrase “good Samaritan,” meaning someone who helps a stranger, derives from this parable, and many hospitals and charitable organisations are named after the Good Samaritan.”

“I’m grateful for marriage.” – Doc Meek

Thursday, October 21, 2010. Today I am grateful for my marriage with Jeannette. We are learning to get along, lo these many years. Still learning. 😼

For her recent birthday, I sent her a cake made totally out of flowers. Definitely a low-calorie cake. 😼

 Image from:  http://ww30.1800flowers.com/collection.do?dataset=11307

Our birthdays are close, hers in September and mine about 3 weeks later in October. So the other evening we went out to celebrate both our birthdays.

We had a quiet time at the Cheesecake Restaurant in Northwest Calary, enjoyed butternut squash soup, mushroom and cheese melt soup in a bread-loaf bowel, fish and chips, and yes, for dessert, a shared piece of cheesecake, smothered in red raspberries. 😼

Next moring, at the crack of dawn, Jeannette had to drive from here in Calgary to Edmonton, Alberta (nearly 4 hours north) and catch a flight to Utah for the Synergy Worldwide Summit Meeting.

Great business she’s in! She helps high-risk heart and diabetic patients and enjoys the work!

Thank you, Jeannette, for being a great spouse!

“Involve me . . . please.” – Student’s plea

It is interesting to me, Doc, that learned Chinese scholars, noted for their attention to literature and research, go beyond their “bookish” spheres and also become experts in music, chess, calligraphy and painting.

Thank you, Chinese scholars, for showing us that “bookish” ways can be augmented with serious interest and expertise in other arts and skills.

“Mediation preferable to court.” – Doc Meek

Wednesday, October 13, 2010. Today I am grateful that legitimate disputes can often be settled amicably by mediation and its variants. Such alternatives are often preferable to court action.

Entrance of the Queen’s Bench of Alberta building (Calgary)

.
The courts are good, honorable, and valuable. It is also good that there are less formal, less intimidating ways to settle legitimate disputes between persons or agencies.
.
Disputes, although they may be disagreeable, can be a valuable learning experience. Parents and teachers for years have encouraged children to learn to settle disputes without resort to violence. Adults of every persuasion can follow this example.
.
Here’s to the people who had the foresight to set up valuable and less expensive ways to settle legitimate disputes.
