Dear DR MEEK, Doctor. Lawyer. Pilot. These were the dreams of young girls I met when I traveled to Liberia with the United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up campaign.These girls are full of potential, but poverty often works against them.  Many families can’t afford the school supplies and uniforms they need to send their daughters to school.  In fact, 40 percent of girls in Liberia 10-14 years of age have never received a formal education.Every girl deserves an education and the chance to follow her dreams.  As students in the U.S. return to class, will you help girls in Liberia do the same? Donate $10 by August 31 to help girls in Liberia get an education. With support of people like you, Girl Up and the United Nations launched a program in Liberia in 2011 to provide adolescent girls with school supplies, basic literacy and math classes, skills training, and more. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by August 31 so more girls in Liberia can receive these vital services.  Will you help us by donating $10 today? “Uniting Girls to Change the World”

Hi Girls,

My mother is one of my biggest supporters and always encourages me to live out my dreams.

When I heard about the challenges other girls face around the world, my dream became to make things better for them.

Unfortunately, many girls in developing countries never get the chance to live out their dreams.

One in seven girls in these countries is forced to marry before she’s 15 years old — robbing her of the chance to go to school, making her more vulnerable to violence, and putting her at risk for health complications.

On Mother’s Day, and all days, share this email with a woman you care about in your life — together you can say I DO take a stand against child marriage.

Show your support by signing the Girl Up petition to end child marriage.

By signing on you are saying I DO want girls around the world to have the chance to live their dreams.

Friday, February 11, 2011. Today I am grateful for people who are engaged in helping girls, not just complaining about their plight. Such a one is Kathy Calvin, CEO of the United Nations Foundation, from whom I received the following email recently.

Whole classrooms and whole schools could add their support to this UNF  “Girl Up” project:

DEAR DR. MEEK,

The United Nations Foundation’s “Girl Up” campaign is a growing movement that is helping shine light on the needs of adolescent girls around the world. We were honored that TIME Magazine chose to highlight “Girl Up” in the February 14th issue, which is out [early]! The article addresses the need to focus more development aid on girls and recognizes those who are empowering teen girls to give back to the global community.

Advocating for women and girls has always been one of the United Nations Foundation’s top priorities. We believe that helping girls succeed is essential in the global drive to eliminate poverty and create a better, healthier, safer world. Studies have shown that an extra year of primary school boosts girls’ eventual wages by 10% to 20% and that an extra year of secondary school increases that statistic by 15% to 25% more. That’s why since our founding, we’ve donated more than $44 million to United Nations programs that support adolescent girls in the developing world, and why we launched the “Girl Up” campaign last year — a campaign that connects girls in the U.S. with their peers around the world.
