I’m not quite there yet (“no complaints whatsoever”). It is not easy to find gratitude when things are not going well, or I just don’t feel well, or I just have low feelings.

However, I was so stunned when I read Marci Shimoff’s “happy hundred” quote (“I have no complaints whatsoever!”) that I was determined to emulate that. This was a 180 degree turnabout for me, as I am a good editor (I can find even the minor mistake in anything).

However, people don’t want to be edited. They want to be loved and accepted, no matter what.

And I am very slowly learning to do that.

Thank you, Marci Shimoff, for taking the time to show us how to be happy and loving (even in a culture of constant complaints)! 😮

Monday, January 10, 2011. I am so grateful I was able to attend the funeral of my friend, Bill Duke, in Langford, B.C. (near Victoria, B.C.) on Vancouver Island just off the west coast of Canada.

I miss my friend Bill, who was a man of integrity no matter what the circumstances.

Bill was a teacher who never stopped learning.

I am also very grateful that David King, former Minister of Education for the province of Alberta, Canada, recognized me at the funeral reception. David was Minister of Education when Bill and I both worked in the Alberta Department of Education together.

In recent times, David King and I were both hoping to visit with Bill and we were both surprised at his “sudden” death. Others told us at the funeral that he had battled cancer for a long time.

I am also very grateful that I was able to visit for a few moments with Bill Duke’s wife Janice and his son, Bill Duke Jr, who gave a moving presentation at the funeral reception. He “broke down” and wept copiously as he remembered his Dad. I said to him that one of our church leaders once said:

“We worry about you when you don’t cry.” (Spencer W. Kimball)

Bill Duke Jr told me he had quoted my funeral home website tribute to his Dad during his presentation. I was glad he told me that as I did not hear everything he said. I don’t hear perfectly and I miss a lot of content these days. 😮

However, the spirit of what Bill Jr was saying about his Dad was perfectly clear.

Thank you, Bill Duke Jr, for weeping while remembering your Dad!

My heart goes out to you and the family, Janice. Even those of us who have not had a lot of recent contact with Bill will miss him dearly.

I will always remember my days in the Alberta Dept of Education, where John Myroon, Gerry Hawley, and others, worked with Bill Duke on various projects. Prior to that I enjoyed being on a Master’s program at the University of Alberta at the same time as Bill was completing his Ph.D. in Educational Administration.

Bill’s kindness and thoughtfulness and care for one and all are legendary. It is amazing to me that he could be so respectful to everyone, “high” and “low” alike.

I said to Bill one day, “You are the only person I know who combines many usually separate traits. You are both very intelligent and very practical; you have both organizational skills and people skills; you have both political skills and business acumen; you have both vision and day-to-day reality knowledge; you both lead and follow, whether it be in relation to your organizational superiors or your subordinates; you care for people in both a professional way and a personal way; you are both a scholar and handyman.”

Bill nodded humbly. I think he was pleased.

Born in Drumheller, Alberta on December 4, 1933 and passed away December 21, 2010 after battling cancer for 6 years. Survived by his loving wife, Janice of 54 years; his 5 children Sherryl Skaalid (Leiv), Jim Duke (Donna), Lori McKinnon (Bing), Bill Duke (Jeanna), Christine Hollins (Clay); 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and sister, Anne Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews.

At age 17, Bill left his home town of Rosedale to attend the University of Alberta where he completed a B.Sc. in 1955, B. Ed in 1956 , M. Ed in 1966 and his Ph.D. in 1970.

He started his career as Principal in Edgerton then moved to Innisfail for one year as principal- designate. The family then relocated to Delburne where Bill was Principal for 4 years. The next career change was as Superintendent of High Prairie School Division and then as High School Inspector in Lethbridge. Bill, Janice and family moved to Edmonton in 1968 where Bill completed his Ph. D. and held various positions with the Department of Education ending his career as Associate Deputy Minister of Education in 1990.

Bill joined Western Management Consultants soon after retirement and came to Victoria for a one-year contract however they remained for the past 15 years where Bill taught at the University of Victoria and Royal Roads.

As a life-long learner Bill presented many workshops all over North America and was a respected educator. Many of his students hold his “Billisms” with fond regard. He will be most remembered as a man who held a genuine interest in all his colleagues, students and friends as he treated everyone with good will and integrity. His sense of humour, intellect and love for animals will be missed.

The Duke family would like to thank special friends: Chris Burke, the DeSorcy’s and Pasini’s as well as Janice’s sorority sisters and neighbours.

Today I am grateful for the opportunity to meet with Tim Uppal, MP for Edmonton-Sherwood Park, regarding Health Canada’s opposition to consumer choice when it comes to dietary supplements, the safest self-helps in the marketplace. Thank heaven we live in a free country where we can oppose bureaucratic efforts to reduce our freedom of choice in healthcare, or any other matter. [MP = Member of Parliament, a federal political office in Canada]

Friday, December 31, 2010. Wow! Where has the year gone? Today I am grateful for those who are campaigning to have a fluoride-free America, Canada, and the world.

Dear Dr. J. Collins Meek,

The Fundraiser
Before we get to how FAN’s messages are getting around the world we have to report on another exciting day in our fundraiser yesterday. Unbelievably, we have nearly reached our goal of $50,000. Yesterday, we received another $2,173 from 37 donors. This brings our grand total to $48,516 from 295 donors.

With 5 more donors we will have reached a total of 300 donors that will mean that we will get another $1000 kicking in from one of our generous challenge donors. At that point we will be a stone’s throw from $50,000 – but some distance from our goal of 500 donors.

But the key challenge for us right now is whether or not we can get another 105 NEW donors – of any amount – to kick in the second donation of $1000 if we can hit 400 donors by midnight Dec 31. This may be a little too ambitious but we have to hope.

For those of you who value the work of FAN but haven’t yet contributed, would you consider chipping in $5? A donation of $10 will get you the DVD “Professional Perspectives on Water Fluoridation” ($12 for Canada and $15 for all other countries).

THE TWO EMAILS
The first came from Mageswari Sangaralingam (a signer of the Professionals’ Statement) from Malaysia who wrote to us that her group, Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) had sent a letter to the newspaper Bernama that had published an article indicating that fluoridation would be re-introduced into the city of Sabah.  Their letter,Stop fluoridation of M’sian, Sabah water supply, signed by S.M. Mohamed Idris, President of CAP, was published today.

The second came from Sweden giving us some interesting historical information on the Swedish campaign to keep fluoridation out of that country and also expressing how puzzling America’s support for this outdated practice is to Swedish eyes. ……………………………………………………………………

Wednesday, December 29, 2010. Today I am grateful for those who are willing to speak out about the questionable practice of  fluoridation of drinking water. Specifically, those such as Dr. Paul Connett, who let us know that the fluoride put into our drinking water supplies by many municipal authorities is a toxic waste product from the aluminum manufacturing industry.

Parents Should be Warned: Fluoridated Water is Not Recommended for Infants

A new study confirms infants fed formula reconstituted with fluoridated water are at greater risk of developing discolored teeth (dental fluorosis). (1) The American Dental Association (ADA) warned dentists about this in 2006 but has done little or nothing to inform the nearly 200 million Americans who live in communities with fluoridated drinking water.

The study by Levy et al., a Journal of the American Dental Association cover story (October 2010), confirms Levy’s earlier studies, which show “[F]luoride intakes during each of the first 4 years were individually significantly related to fluorosis on maxillary central incisors, with the first year most important,” and that “[I]nfant formulas reconstituted with higher fluoride water can provide 100 to 200 times more fluoride than breastmilk, or cow’s milk.” (2, 3)

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 32% of American children have dental fluorosis, an increase of 23% from the 1980s. (4) Black and Hispanic populations have even higher rates. “The message from Dr. Levy’s work is loud and clear: Don’t give babies fluoridated water,” says Paul Connett, PhD, Executive Director, Fluoride Action Network (FAN). “Unfortunately the ADA has known about these risks for more than four years. Researchers are telling dentists; but dentists are not telling parents.”

This and other little-known adverse fluoride health effects led Connett to co-author, “The Case Against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics that Keep it There,” with James Beck, MD, PhD, professor emeritus of medical physics, University of Alberta and Spedding Micklem, DPhil, professor emeritus at Edinburgh University.

A recent review in The Lancet (5) describes fluoride as “an emerging neurotoxic substance” that may damage the developing brain. The National Research Council (NRC) has identified fluoride as an “endocrine disrupter” that may impair thyroid function. A recent Harvard University study links fluoride to bone cancer (6).

“Approximately half of the newborns and infants I see in practice are fed formula reconstituted with fluoridated water, which I find alarming since the blood-brain barrier is not even developed until 6 months of age, placing these young infants at risk for neurotoxic effects that can be severe and permanent,” says Dr. Yolanda Whyte, a pediatrician in Georgia. “Parents should be warned not to give fluoridated water to babies and children, and they should know that fluoride is also present in juice and other water-reconstituted beverages. I diagnose dental fluorosis on average 5 times daily, but fluoride doesn’t only affect teeth, it can potentially affect the brain and nervous system, kidneys, bones, and other tissues in young children during their critical stages of organ development. A public awareness campaign is urgently needed.”
