Tranquility of single flower (or snowflake) at home

Sunday, August 8, 2010. In a previous Sunday post we published a tranquil mountain lake scene, for restful de-stressing of the mind and body, to enhance the brain’s capacity for better learning. If you missed that post, click on the link to its title here:   Tranquil scene at Jasper National Park, Canada

What if you can’t “get away” to a tranquil mountain lake, or even a nearby lake? What if you are “stuck” at home? No problem. The brain, body and soul can find sweet “balm in Gilead” by gazing tenderly at the beauty of a single flower at home.

“If I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden.”

The “M.V. International” cruise on Waterton Lake

Saturday, August 6, 2010

My wife Jeannette and I spent the day at Waterton National Park, Waterton, Alberta, CANADA. We took the little historic “M.V. International” ship on Waterton Lake and crossed over the border into the USA on the lake, landing at Goat Haunt Landing.

We learned a lot about the history of this area and about the abundant wildlife. We say deer in town, including two little “Bambi” fawns. We saw a black bear. We missed the moose. They had retired for the night I guess. 😮

It was a great day, and now we are outside the park, down the road aways, in Pincher Creek, Alberta, for the night.

To beautiful mountain lakes!

Classroom penpal projects improve many skills

Thursday, August 5, 2010. We are grateful today for Beth’s guest article about classroom penpal projects, which help students develop many language arts and other skills. – Doc Meek

Did you know that our K-6 Education Forum is a very popular (not to mention, easy-to-use) spot for connecting with other teachers around the globe who want to exchange letters. You should definitely take a minute and check it out. ~Beth

Start a Pen Pal Program for the 2010-2011 School Year

For many years now, teachers around the globe have flocked to the Pen Pals folder of the Elementary Education Forum in order to easily pair up with partner classrooms with whom exchange letters. I am still partial to pencil-and-paper letters, especially in this digital age. I love introducing the old fashioned feel of stamps and envelopes to my students. It’s fairly simple to set up a Pen Pal program, even if you’ve never done it before. The benefits are many; exchanging letters meets a wide variety of curriculum standards plus it’s truly fun and enlightening for your students.

So what are you waiting for? Partner up and get writing!… Read more

Learning is just as important for girls as for boys

Wednesday, August 4, 2010. My oldest daughter’s birthday today! She’s all grown up, married, has two children, and left home long ago. 😮 Happy birthday, Tanya! And many more!

Tanya and her two daughters; photo from Facebook:  http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/photo.php?pid=1167193&op=1&o=global&view=global&subj=583987065&id=711955527&fbid=27865975527

Learning to love learning

Tanya is a good example of the importance of loving learning. If you don’t want to fall in love with learning, that’s OK. Just learn to enjoy it. If you don’t enjoy it now, find a way–somehow–to learn to make it easier for yourself to study more efficiently and to remember longer. You can do it, believe me.

That’s what I teach my students in my private practice at THE LEARNING CLINIC WORLDWIDE. When you learn to enjoy learning, or at least to enjoy becoming more competent, it will stand you in good stead your whole life through.

Tanya finished high school with good grades and went on to nursing school to pursue and obtain her RN (Registered Nurse) Certificate. Later, she completed her bachelor’s degree in nursing.

When she worked “up north,” as we say in Canada (it’s actually “down north,” in terms of elevation), she was both nurse and “doctor” in the sense that she was the only “medical” person for many miles around. She provided great service in Canada’s north.

Later, in more turbulent times

Later, when she was going through a “rough patch” in her life, she was so grateful to have secured post-secondary qualifications, as she was able to provide sufficient income to more than just survive.

So, pay attention girls. You never know what life will bring. Get all the education and/or training that you can and you will always congratulate yourself for looking after your future self as best you could.

When the going gets tough in your schooling, get help. Fortunately there is usually an abundance of help of all kinds for people who are trying to better themselves through advanced education or training.

To the best that is in you, girls!

Poorest villagers improve food, water, education

Global Hope Network International
To visit GHNI’s website, click on this link: Global Hope Network International

We at THE LEARNING CLINIC WORLDWIDE are so grateful for the Global Hope Network International (GHNI) and their work with the poorest of the poor in rural villages in developing countries worldwide.

At THE LEARNING CLINIC WORLDWIDE we have always stressed the importance of HOPE, as we have taught that real learning involves the connection of the “4-H’s” of education:  HEAD/HEART/HANDS/HOPE.

The Global Hope people inspire HOPE in the rural village poor by helping to bring transformational community development (local leadership ownership) forward on four fronts:

(1) Agricultural improvements (healthy food for families, and income from good “cash” crops for market)

(2) Clean water

(3) Wellness

(4) Education

Why focus on the village poor?

Hal Jones, President of GHNI, answers this question by letting us know that “75% of the world’s poor live in rural areas of developing countries” [from World Bank report] and that “the most effective way to raise the income of the poor is through agriculture.”

To read all of Hal Jones very short and enlightening letter, click on the following 2 links:

GLOBAL HOPE for village poor part 1

GLOBAL HOPE for village poor part 2

We at THE LEARNING CLINIC WORLDWIDE are grateful that in Canada and the US we are blessed with so much abundance, and that we are better equipped to help our rural poor, and our urban poor.

To Abundance for All!
