I am grateful for this new day, in which to learn new things and enjoy learning old things again as a reminder. We all have much knowledge in us of which we are not always aware.

Too busy to post an article today. Still cleaning and repairing basement suite. I am grateful we are almost done this big job, which we would not have been able to complete without the help of our friend Craig Reilly.

“How to be happy though miserable.” – Doc Meek

Wednesday, August 18, 2010. Today I am grateful for ideas that help others (and perhaps ourselves into the bargain, eh?) For some reason this reminds me of Joe Btfsplk, the perpetual “dark-rain-cloud-over-his-head” character created by Al Capp in his “Li’l Abner” comic strip, more than sixty years ago now.

Joe Btfsplk, the world’s worst jinx, in this excerpt from the March 20, 1947 strip

Joe Btfsplk was a character in the satirical comic strip Li’l Abner by cartoonist Al Capp (1909–1979). He’s well-meaning, but is the world’s worst jinx, bringing disastrous misfortune to everyone around him. A small, dark rain cloud perpetually hovers over his head to symbolize his bad luck. Hapless Btfsplk and his ever-present cloud became one of the most iconic images in Li’l Abner.

One storyline in the early 1970s features him trapping his cloud in a special anti-pollutant jar. Joe becomes romantically involved with a gal for the first time—until her crazed ex-boyfriend shows up to kill him. Joe reluctantly opens the jar and releases his cloud in order to take care of the boyfriend, and wistfully realizes that he wasn’t meant for any other kind of life. As he returns to his normal, loner existence, his cloud once again in tow, he is for the moment satisfied to be who he really is.

In addition to the obvious comic effect, Capp often used Joe Btfsplk as a deus ex machina to produce miraculous rescues or to effect plot twists. Joe was later licensed for use in a series of animated TV commercials for Head & Shoulders, a dandruff shampoo.

Etymology

How else would you pronounce it?
—Al Capp

According to Al Capp, btfsplk is a rude sound. During public lectures, Capp demonstrated this phatic sound by closing his lips, leaving his tongue sticking out, and then blowing out air, which is colloquially called a “raspberry” or Bronx cheer. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Thank you, Al Capp! Today I want to remind us we don’t have to accept who we “are.” We can change our mind, change our behavior and change our achievement.

Years ago, I worked with a grade seven student who was failing science. (He was failing everything else too, and we decided to start with science.)

Doc Meek: “Well, Sam [not his real name], what was your mark on your last science exam?”

Sam: “24%.”

Doc: “Do you like your science teacher?”

Sam: “I hate my science teacher.”

Doc: “OK, here’s the deal. How would you like to go on hating your science teacher and get 74% on your next science exam a month from now?”

Sam: ” . . . Uh . . . [mumbles] . . . that’s not possible!!”

Doc: “Want to try me?”

Sam: “I can’t do that!”

Doc: “What?”

Sam: “Get a higher mark when I hate my science teacher!”

Doc: “I’ll show you how to do it, OK”

Sam: “It won’t happen [defeated tone].”

Doc: “OK, just follow my instructions and we’ll see how it goes, OK? I’ll show you how to use your brain differently and watch your marks go up, OK?”

[Sam did the work. He started using his brain differently. Things got better for him at school, both in the classroom and out of the classroom as well.]

Doc [five weeks later]: “Sam, what mark did you get on your science exam that you wrote the other day?”

Sam: “74%.”

Doc: “Impossible!”

Sam: “No, I got 74%.”

Doc: “Do you still hate your science teacher?”

Sam: “Yah . . . he’s really not that great you know. He’s not as bad as he used to be though.”

Doc: “Well, that’s good. Don’t get carried away though, eh? Don’t start liking him a lot. Your marks may go down.”

Sam [grinning from ear to ear]: “I’ll try to keep on not liking him.” 😮

[Then, inexplicably, Sam started to cry.]

Doc: “Whatcha thinking?”

Sam: “Why didn’t somebody show me this [how to use my brain in school] in grade one? It would have stopped all the hell I went through for years!”

Doc: “They didn’t know. I’m doing teacher trainings now. That should help a bit. Maybe the university will start putting it in the teacher training courses, eh? Wouldn’t that be nice?” 😮

Sam continued to do well in school and became a “different person” all around. He was really the same person. He had just learned to use his brain differently. That’s all.

“And that has made all the difference,” as Robert Frost averred many years ago now, in this poem entitled, “The Road Not Taken.”

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Gratitude for good friend Craig Reilly

Humble Man in Prayer

…………………………………….

Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Today I am grateful to have some time to be writing again. Yesterday I had no time for writing as we (my wife Jeannette and I) were clearning up and repairing a basement suite all day and all evening.

We were blessed to have the invaluable help of our dear friend Craig Reilly. He not only helps with the drudge work, he also solves intricate repair problems and incomprehensible electrical issues.

He is a genius with humility and patience, a rare combination perhaps?

We’ve been friends with Craig and his wife Val “forever.”

How much we are able to learn from our friends, if we let ourselves.

How much they are able to learn from us if they wish to do so.

We can learn without judgment and without blame. Isn’t that what good friends are for? And isn’t that what we need and want from our families at home and from our classrooms at school?

Craig Reilly has helped us with so many projects over so many years, we cannot count the depth and breadth of his service to us. And he gives service with unstinting patience to all, not just to us.

We salute you, Craig, on the mountaintops of achievement and in the valleys of laughter and sorrow.

Here’s to best friends, and best learning, at home and at school.

Dr. Toril Jelter, a fighter for children’s health

Saturday, August 14, 2010. Today I am overwhelmingly grateful for Dr. Toril Jelter, a pediatrician who is intensely focused on the improving the health and minds of our children. This is what THE LEARNING CLINIC WORLDWIDE has been advocating for years. – Doc Meek

Dr. Toril Jelter’s website is: http://www.drjelter.com

Biomedical Evaluation and Treatment of Autistic children

Today evidence-based medicine shows that:

  • Autism is a medical disease, not a psychological disorder.
  • Autism affects other body organ systems besides the brain.
  • Autism is Treatable; Children Are Recovering

From Dr. Bryan Jepson’s book “Changing the Course of Autism”

“Biomedical treatments help the majority of children with autism, particularly if started early. The cornerstones of this treatment are dietary changes, supplementation and detoxification. Addressing medical issues and pursuing therapies simultaneously offers autistic children the best long-term outcome.”

Has your child recently been diagnosed with autism?

If so, you have probably combed every corner of the internet, literature and magazines for information about autism and available treatments. While medical science has so far not discovered a cure for this complex disease, there are fortunately many things you can do to halt its progression and in some cases even reverse its course. Until recently autism was considered to be a genetic disorder which caused a life-long developmental disability. That is changing. Today scientists realize that in most cases it is a complex interaction between genes and the environment. Understanding this is critical to treating your child.

Biographical Information

Dr. Toril Jelter is a board certified pediatrician specializing in medical and environmental aspects of autism. She received her medical degree from the University of Oslo, Norway graduating with honors in 1985. Dr. Jelter’s pediatric training was at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She is affiliated with John Muir Medical Center and has received a physician recognition award for continuing medical education.

Dr. Jelter has participated in Defeat Autism Now Training and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“My goal is to improve overall function for each child in the safest, fastest and most affordable manner possible” Dr. Jelter

“Gratitude and Learning.” – Doc Meek

Friday, August 13, 2010. I read a report once about all the good and great things that have happened on Friday the 13th. So I have been delighted with Friday the 13th ever since. 😮

Today I am grateful, once again, for Stacey Grewal’s persistence in practicing what she preaches in her book, Gratitude and Goals: Create the Life You Would Love to Live. Pure genius. Who would ever have thought to connect gratitude and goals?

Here’s quick review of Stacey Grewal’s book, from her website: http://www. staceygrewal.com

Gratitude and Goals: Create the Life You Would Love to Live, by Stacey Grewal

[Stacey] intentionally made this book short and sweet. Everything you need to create the life of your dreams is already locked inside of you. Gratitude and Goals is the key to making it happen.

In just ten to fifteen minutes each day, the Gratitude and Goals Daily Journal will forever change the way you think and feel, and the way you live your life. You will accomplish more in the first thirty days of using it than you ever did before you had a plan of action. It will help you turn any hobby into a career, start a business, earn a degree, find true love, lose twenty (or even 120) pounds, clean the garage, improve your golf game, learn how to play an instrument, read War and Peace or maybe write a book of your own. It can even completely alter your way of life, helping you become a better, more successful and happier person in all areas of your life.

Gratitude and Goals is a two-part book (Book One and Book Two). It is a step-by-step, instructional guide and a daily gratitude, goal setting and personal growth journal, written for the millions who have settled for a mundane life, a mediocre job and ho-hum relationships, but who know they want and deserve more. More happiness, deeper love, greater wealth, better health, heightened spirituality, inner peace and explosive success. It’s for those who want to be the very best they can be and who want to experience all they’ve ever dreamed of. It’s for those who want to feel the throb of passion and purpose in every waking moment, but who have been either too busy or too afraid, or who just haven’t known how to achieve it.

It is for those who have waded through piles of “inspirational” books that promise: “You can have everything!” but who still find themselves eating the boxed macaroni and cheese dinner of life. I don’t know about you, but I’ve found many of the popular “self-help” books to be long on promise, but short on delivery. They fail to create any real, lasting results. Well, I’m happy to tell you that this book is different.

Book One, titled, You Are the Master of Your Today and the Creator of Your Tomorrow is a “how to” manual, spiritual teacher, personal coach and mentor. It is filled with valuable gratitude and goal setting strategies, easy to follow instructions, examples, experience and quick exercises to help you achieve the physical, emotional and spiritual prosperity you desire. It thoroughly explains why gratitude works, what you can do to achieve this remarkable feeling and, most important, how you can use it to confidently set and achieve new long term, short term and daily goals.

Gratitude and Goals is a complete mind, body and spirit system designed to help you increase self-awareness. It will help you identify those things which are running counter to your dreams, then motivate you to become accountable, and committed to changing them. After only a few weeks of working with this program, you will be astonished to find that not only has your overall success rate increased, but you will be on a new path towards enlightenment.

Book Two, The Gratitude and Goals Daily Journal, is a practical, hands-on application for those who want to do more than just talk (or read) about changing. It is a gratitude list, a goal setting journal, a personal growth support system, a to-do list, a memo pad and a progress tracker, with over 120 daily journal-style, fill-in-the-blank pages that you just won’t find in any other book. And it is so easy to use that you are guaranteed to experience real results the very first time you use it. …………………………………………………………………….

Thank you , Stacey!

You inspire me to write my own book, Gratitude and Learning: Create the Brain You Would Love to Have. 😮

Doc Meek, Friday, August 13, 2010, at Nose Hill Public Library in Calgary, Alberta, CANADA

P.S. Can anyone out there (besides Stacey Grewal) help me write my own book, Gratitude and Learning: Create the Brain You Would Love to Have?

I need help to get this book written!!! Help!!!

Or I could write, How to Be Happy Though Desperate, eh? 😮

I’ll need help with that one too!!!

Doc

“Ask me anything.” – Doc Meek

Thursday, August 12, 2010. Today I am grateful that I have had more than thirty (30) years of great experience with almost all aspects of education and learning. They call me the “the brain guy.” – Doc Meek

People are always asking me questions about teaching, learning, and how the brain operates. And how the school systems operate.

I am delighted to answer any and all questions! 😮

So this is an open invitation to all of you who are parents, teachers, students, or educational administrators:

“Ask me anything”

I learned that phrase from my internet mentor, Connie Ragen Green. She teaches people how to be a business success on the internet, like she is. She is a great teacher/learner. Kind, considerate, and patiently able to explain answers to all questions, including the “dumb questions” people are almost afraid to ask. That’s Connie.

“There are no dumb questions, ” Connie says, and she practices what she preaches. And she keeps learning. She never stops learning. I think that is one reason she is such a good teacher. She is a good student as well. Thank you Connie! I am grateful for your example.

Same invitation from Doc: “Ask me anything.”

“Ask me anything about education, training, the brain, the mind, behavior, emotion, teaching, teacher training, student learning problems, and so on.”

I have had extensive training and experience with almost all aspects of education and learning, including the administrative and financial aspects. (See my Qualifications Brief by clicking on the date of July 15, 2010, on the calendar on the right-hand side of the screen when you first visit THE LEARNING CLINIC WORLDWIDE blog at

https://docmeek.com

There is almost nothing about education, learning or the brain that you can ask me, about which I have not had some degree of familiarity.

You can ask me with confidence and I will respond with both knowlege and compassion. If I don’t know the answer I will find it for you.

And even a little humor may go a long way, eh?

Years ago, a Calgary magazine reported:

“Dr. Meek brings a unique blend of warmth, intelligence and humor to everything he does.” Thank you, Calgary!

If you have any questions or comments, just click on the little blue word “comments” at the bottom right-hand side of this article, and a form will appear that you can use to ask any question you wish.

” . . . you are on sacred ground.” – Louise Meek

Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Today I am grateful for the variety in Nature, the lovely variety.

Wet beach pebbles April 2006
The individual pebbles include pale limestone and green serpentines
……………………………………………………………….

When my wife Jeannette and I were walking on the beach at Waterton Lake recently, the many little pebbles reminded me of what my friend suggested to me.

My friend suggested that I carry a special small stone in my pocket. He said that I could carry it with me everywhere and whenever I put my hand in my pocket and felt this little round stone, I could think of something for which I was grateful at that moment.

I am doing this and two things surprised me:

(1) It lifted my spirits to be reminded in this gentle way of those things for which I am grateful, and

(2) It reminded me of my maternal grandmother, who lived a great life and passed on at age 98. Usually I think of her rarely, and it surprised me that my “pocket touchstone” reminded me of her “for no reason.”

Perhaps stones and maternal grandmothers both age gracefully? 😮

“Every time an old person dies, it is like a library burning down.” – Rick Steber (author)

True. And my grandmother did tell us some great stories about her life. Hopefully I will be able to write an article about her in a future post.

One thing my Mother, Louise Meek, passed on to me was this admonition, which I have tried to live:

“Whenever you are discussing someone else’s religion or culture, remember you are on sacred ground; take off your shoes and walk softly.”

Thank you, Mom!

“Grateful for “Elders of Excellence” – Louise Hay

I am grateful today [Tuesday, August 10, 2010] for our guest article from Veterans Affairs Canada:  http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/youth/sub.cfm?source=feature/week/pilgrimage/bios/spear

“Thomas Arnott Ballingal Spear, Veteran of the First World War, Calgary, Alberta,” written by Veterans Affairs Canada February 18, 1999.

Thomas Arnott Ballingal Spear

[Tom Spear, an ordinary man who did ordinary things extraordinarily well]

Tom Spear was born in Galt, Ontario, on October 22, 1896. The son of a pioneer missionary who ministered in the Northwest Territories, Tom grew up in Innisfail, Alberta, and Pipestone, Manitoba. He eventually moved to Emerson, Manitoba, where he got a job, in early 1915, as a telegrapher for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). Tom enlisted in the Canadian Signal Company in Winnipeg on February 25, 1916, and arrived in England aboard the SS Baltea on May 25, 1916. He was sent to Shorncliffe, where he received additional training in communications. Being a professional telegrapher, it didn’t take him long to master the Allies’ Continental Code, which was slightly different from the Morse Code that he was used to using.

While in England, as part of the 5th Canadian Division and waiting to be sent over to France, Mr. Spear remembers the morale amongst the men was excellent, “They were ready and rarin’ to go.” The 5th Division was dispersed when the soldiers finally were called up and transferred as reinforcement troops for the other Canadian Divisions, which had experienced heavy casualties at Vimy, Passchendaele and Amiens. Tom arrived in France on April 11, 1918 and remained there until 1919.

Mr. Spear worked as in the Wireless Section, in “interception”, most of the time he was in France. The wireless radio was very necessary to the advancing troops. It wasn’t subject to the breaks in over-land transmissions that exploding shells caused when they severed cables. Tom also remembers working in a truck that had an antenna on its roof, capable of receiving signals from as far away as the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Despite having experienced a close call during shelling on the Arras front, Tom doesn’t feel it serves any purpose to revisit the horrors of war. He does recall with sadness, however, the loss of his 23-year-old brother, William D. Spear, MM, who was killed in action on September 27, 1918, during the Battle at Canal du Nord while he was repairing damaged lines. They had served in the same Signals Unit with the Canadian Engineers. While on the 80th anniversary pilgrimage, Tom will have the opportunity to visit Will’s grave at the Bourlon Woods Cemetery.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Tom was once again recruited for signals. He states that the technology had changed so much since his prior service that he was redirected to other duties, in the Air Training Command of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Three times during the war, he was recommended for the Order of the British Empire. Mr. Spear was an Acting Wing Commander by the war’s end, when he returned home to Winnipeg and resumed his work with the CPR, where his career spanned a very successful 50 years.

Tom now  [1999] lives in Calgary and leads a very active life, still enjoying golf, curling, fly fishing, and dancing. He drives his own car, and is proud that his memoirs on “my 102 years of quality living” [will soon be available in bookstores]. ………………………………………………………………………………………..

Thank you, Tom, for your exemplary life! Even though you have doubtless passed on by now [2010], we salute you!

Tom, I am going to read your book!

Parents and teachers can find a rich resource for home and classroom learning in the lives and times of our “Ordinary Elders” and our “Elders of Excellence.”

For some reason, staying at Dead Man’s Flats brought forth my sense of humor, despite the ghoulish name of the place, eh? 😮 How would you like to live in a place called Dead Man’s Flats? You would probably love it if the scenery was as beautiful and gratifying as it in this lovely place. 😮

This reminded me of how humor and laughter lighten learning, and open new learning channels of the brain. Parents and teachers who learn how to incorporate humor into everyday life at home and in the classroom enhance learning in the moment and help to create long-term interest in learning as well.

“I have seen what a laugh can do. It can transform almost unbearable tears into something bearable, even hopeful. ”  —Bob Hope (1903-2003)

Laughter even helps you have better health.

A healthier body = a healthier brain

“Laugh More To Live Longer,” by Dr. Michael Cutler on 07/04/2010

Are you feeling down… stressed… tense… or depressed? Does it seem like your spouse keeps stepping on your last nerve… and your coworkers were put on this earth to drive you crazy? Well, laugh it off and you’ll live a longer, healthier and more satisfying life according to recent studies.

Laughter has been shown to relax muscles, increase oxygen flow, promote circulation and reduce tension, as well as lower blood pressure, aid in social bonding, ease stress and boost your immune system. It can even help promote a healthier appetite in the elderly or disabled, and may even lower your cholesterol and reduce your heart disease risk.

A recent health report lists the following five benefits of a good sense of humor:

  • Most laughs involve exhaling deeply and when you exhale, your blood pressure and heart rate decrease, and you then experience a calmness and sense of relief indicates Dacher Keltner, Ph.D. professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley.
  • You’ll be better able to bond with your spouse because those who laugh together to ease tension are much more likely to have better marriages according to John Gottman, Ph.D., a psychologist at the Gottman Institute.
  • According to researchers from the Loma Linda University in California, even anticipating a good laugh decreases your stress hormones dopac (by 38 percent), cortisol (by 39 percent) and epinephrine (by 70 percent).
  • In a study reported in the International Journal of Medical Sciences, those of us who enjoy chuckling as much as 10 to 25 times a day experience fewer diseases than those who laugh less than that amount.
  • A survey of close to 600 men shows that 73 percent believed that having a good sense of humor made them better on their jobs.

What better way to promote good health and great happiness than to laugh your way through life? Try it daily and you’ll find that laughter truly is the best medicine.
